Katherine Jenkins "never claimed to be opera star"

jenk.jpgI know, what's that about? Surely singing opera songs made it kind of implicit. Apparently not. At the first night of the Hay Festival, Forces Sweetheart and Welsh nationalist Jenkins revealed that she had never claimed to be an opera star.

She told the audience that opera was still her long-term aim. Jenkins claimed to have been "annoyed" about the criticism for her style of singing, such as when Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's described her as an "opera fake" earlier this year. But she said: "I have always set myself as 30 the time to go into opera." Oh, and quizzed on her relationship with Strictly Come Dancing star Gethin Jones, she replied simply: "He's fine". Spoilsport.

I think that's as good an excuse as any to have another look at the Jenker and the Rhyddler giving it loads on The X Factor. Will you join me over the page, and tell me - beautiful voice? Or pretty much exactly what Mrs Piggy would sound like?

You are absolutely correct that singing in opera makes it implicit that someone wishes to be an opera star. Katherine Jenkins has never sung in an opera in her life, isn't good enough to be cast, and cannot sing without amplification, unlike opera singers.

She does, however, claim on her official website, and in numerous interviews, not only to be an opera singer, but also to be better than those who actually walk the walk. Interestingly, Kiri te Kanawa didn't actually name Katherine in her list of fakes, but undeterred, Kath has spent the weeks and months since rebutting that she is a fake.

Sometimes she says she is a classical singer, which in her definition (and no one else's) is singing Take That songs with an orchestra...
