Rula Lenska slams reality tv

rle.jpgThe words 'biting' 'feeds' and 'hand' come to mind, as Celeb Big Brother loser Rula Lenska hits out at reality television this week. Lenska is making a big deal of promising Birmingham theatregoers some "high brow" entertainment in the play she's starring in this weekend, not like the stuff dished out by tv producers these days.

The bouffant actress, who will appear in "Seven Deadly Sins, Four Deadly Sinners" at the Crescent Theatre on Sunday, attacks the glut of reality TV, gardening, cookery and Changing Rooms-style shows around now. So did she feel appearing on a programme where she'd have to play a weird, slightly erotic human/cat game with a Scottish politician was good for her artistic integrity?

"The only reason I did it was because, in Celebrity Big Brother, you are promised a very large sum of money for your chosen charity, made out of calls and texts into the programme."

Rula used the Big Brother money to support wildlife projects protecting elephants, gorillas and tigers in their native environments.

She adds: "I wouldn't do another one, and if I had seen Big Brother beforehand, I certainly would have had second thoughts about doing this one, despite the money for charity. It seems the main idea of the show is to cause humiliation and degradation. Never mind, it was an experience, just not a very agreeable one."

Rula has another reason for not liking much of today's television, saying that it puts actors out of work.

"Pardon my French, but there's so much crap on television at the moment which doesn't challenge the intelligence of the audience. How many programmes can there be about gardening, cooking, house makeovers?"

Her play will be different, though. She said: "Seven Deadly Sins is quite high-brow, with monologues and quotes from people like Oscar Wilde, some of it funny, some of it a bit scary. There is a stable of actresses who do this show on Sundays when we are free."

A stable of actresses? Literally? That sounds like a hell of a reality show waiting to happen...

Seven Deadly Sins, Four Deadly Sinners is at the Crescent on March 16. Tickets priced £20. It forms part of a series of shows at the theatre dedicated to 50 years of Sid James, Kenneth Williams and the like during March.
