Chelsea takes China in new football reality show
Here's an exotic one for you. Or at least, a delicious mixture of the exotic and the homely, with a heap of unexpected talent thrown in. Come to think of it, this is very much the Mylene Klass of reality tv stories. Soccer team Chelsea are going to be giving trials to four Chinese youngsters after partnering up with a talent show in the People's Republic.
In Super Soccer Star, which will be broadcast in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong next month, the four showing the most promise will visit the Blues' academy at Cobham in Surrey and Stamford Bridge.
The contest is open to players aged between 14 and 16 and is part of an ongoing project by the west London club to boost their profile in the Far East. Chelsea's already the official football development partner of the Asian Football Confederation's Vision China project, which aims to set up 10 city leagues in the country.
Chelsea chief exec Peter Kenyon said: "We are delighted to be involved in such an innovative project that helps us deliver on our continuing commitment to promote grass roots football amongst youngsters in China. The show complements our involvement in Vision China with the AFC as well as showcasing Chelsea to a large audience and we look forward to hosting the finalists of Super Soccer Star in England."
