Yay Or Nay Wednesday: Did you enjoy DanceX?
Or, if I were feeling a little harsher: Did Anyone Actually Give A Monkeys About DanceX? I mean really, that was pretty damn woeful wasn't it? I did all sorts of dancing all through my childhood, so I'm more interested in this sort of thing than most, and even I was utterly turned off.
And I had such high hopes! Strictly Come Dancing is seriously fantastic TV - the celebs get into it (and loads out of it), the judges are well-informed and interesting characters, and the costumes are truly stunning. I know that sounds trivial, but when you're making a programme dealing in this business we call Show, then it has to look good. The poor DanceX contestants looked like they'd been given a tenner and a sewing machine and told to get on with it themselves. "And make sure the skirts are short!"
And don't get me started about the fact that the contestants entered a DANCING COMPETITION, only to find that their competitors could stay in 'til the end if they had half a voice, even if they seemed to be physically allergic to dancing. Yes Claire, I am talking about you.
Next problem: the X Factor effect. All that posing and scowling from Bruno and Arlene, all that dramatic music. People even crossed their arms, clearly wanting to shout "I've got the... er.... DanceX factor!" The moment BBC starts copying ITV is the moment we should all start worrying. So I hope you're worrying.
The fact is, this was ill-thought out, was clearly done on the cheap, and attracted decidedly average performers, with a few exceptions. It came and went without making any sort of impact, and deserves to be consigned to the dustbin of reality TV history. Oh, I should ask what you think... but I'm afraid you're not allowed to disagree!
