The X Factor: woman thrown out for being pregnant
So, did you miss Saturday's show? The latest controversy (there's always something, isn't there?) surrounds Cowell's decision to kick out a heavily pregnant lady after voting her through to boot camp. The change of heart came about when the X Factor judge computed that the baby would be born "in the middle of the finals", felt something approximating what us humans call guilt, and identified it as a malfunction in his emotion circuits.
Sharon Osbourne said 24 year old Katie Boothand "sang very, very well indeed" and wondered whether she could cope with the mounting pressures of the show. Dannii was worried about the unborn child - a "no", but Simon reluctantly waved her through. After she left the room, though, he started to have serious doubts.
"A part of me thinks we shouldn't have just done that because she's five and a half months pregnant. That should have been a 'no'. It doesn't feel right, I'm almost inclined to change my mind now."
Louis Walsh agreed, and Minogue says: "I've got nothing against pregnant women but you can't be singing on live TV and giving birth at the same time." and I should know, she added, I've tried. No, no she didn't.
Cowell went outside and told Katie: "I think we've made a mistake. I absolutely think this is the wrong decision and I know it's horrible to be given a 'yes' but I want to be honest with you, I don't feel right about this. I'm thinking about you and the kid and everything and I think this is absolutely the wrong thing to do."
Comments on The Daily Mail article provide the usual laugh-a-minute entertainment: "These whinges from unsuccessful contestants are indicative of the spoilt and pampered youth of today." Yep, they really did say "youth of today". Couldn't make it up. Fantastic.
