The change of heart came about when the X Factor judge computed that the baby would be born "in the middle of the finals", felt something approximating what us humans call guilt, and identified it as a malfunction in his emotion circuits.

Sharon Osbourne said 24 year old Katie Boothand "sang very, very well indeed" and wondered whether she could cope with the mounting pressures of the show. Dannii was worried about the unborn child - a "no", but Simon reluctantly waved her through. After she left the room, though, he started to have serious doubts.

"A part of me thinks we shouldn't have just done that because she's five and a half months pregnant. That should have been a 'no'. It doesn't feel right, I'm almost inclined to change my mind now."
