The X Factor: "Simon Cowell saved my life"

jac.jpgLoving this story in The Mail about Simon Cowell saving someone's life with a throwaway remark. Singer Jacqui Gray has revealled that it was Cowell's reference to her "weird-sounding voice" when she auditioned for the show that prompted her to see a throat specialist.

Doctors diagnosed Jacqui with a potentially lethal lung infection, catching it before it became too far advanced. This is actually a bit creepy - after she'd sung her bit, Simon said "It's like someone else is in there". Both Cowell and fellow judge Sharon Osbourne then advised the mother-of-two to get her throat seen to by a specialist.

It turned out that Jacqui had bronchiectasis, a potentially lethal lung infection. "It was quite scary," she said. "In the X-ray it looked like a tree growing inside me."

Jacqui added: "Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne saved my life and I would just like to thank them. "Without going on the X-factor, I wouldn't have even thought about going to the doctor about it. God knows what would have happened if I had left it for much longer, it could have been far more serious."

Bronchiectasis causes irreversible damage to the bronchial tubes, which carry air in and out of the lungs. The damage caused to ears by listening to Jacqui sing is not yet known.
