Reality TV in Fiction

tasks.jpg

Can't get enough reality TV in your everyday life? Oh it's all so meta and postmodern I think my head is about to fall off. But here, in no particular order, are my top 5 fictional reality TV programs! Can you think of any more?

1. The Running Man. An Arnie vehicle from 1987, "The Running Man" is a deadly gameshow where the objective is simply to remain alive for 30 days. Contestants are declared an enemy of the state, and earn money for killing cops, and lasting the distance. Get caught, and you're killed on live tv. You thought Big Brother was bad...

2. "My Little Eye" is a daft horror flick about some kids who enter a competition to stay in a big remote house and be filmed for 6 months. At the time it was made, staying in one house with a load of attention-seeking strangers for more than a few weeks was obviously the most horrific thing imaginable. Since BB 8, of course, the bar has been raised.

3. Videodrome - It's reality tv, 80's style... "A lowly cable TV operator begins to see his life and the future of media spin out of control in a very unusual fashion when he acquires a new kind of programming for his station". It's a bit pervy and weird, to be honest, but that's reality tv for you.

4. Sliver got a terrible score on the IMDB, but I really enjoyed the Ira Levin book. Not exactly reality TV, but about a weird voyeuristic guy with a secret room full of monitors - very much what we imagine lies behind the back wall of the BB Diary Room.

5. Dead Famous is a Ben Elton novel from 2001, with a very intriguing plot. There's a reality tv show, right, like Big Brother - but one of the contestants gets murdered! With hilarious consequences, no doubt.
