How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? did not provide excessive "product prominence"
So those bastions of honesty the BBC Trust have ruled that How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? didn't give Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of The Sound Of Music undue promotion. Except it did, didn't it? I mean, I'm fine with that - it was a great programme, and being a telly gal that's all I really care about - but you have to admit that it's a massive advert for the show. The advertising for The Sound Of Music wasn't allowed to mention the fact that Connie Fisher was Her Off The Telly, but that doesn't really make much difference.
BBC Trust, to be fair, did express concern at producer David Ian's inclusion on the judging panel, seeing as though he was quite clear that he was primarily concerned with getting bums on seats. In any case, it seems that the way has been cleared for more of these shows, and let's face it, the Beeb do them a hell of a lot better than ITV (Grease Is The Word was pretty woeful) so BBC Trust's questionable ruling gets a thumbs up from me... Who's up for How Do Solve A Problem Like Jesus? You know, for Jesus Christ Superstar. I *dare* them. [via The Stage]
