Narinder from Big Brother 2 available for BBC Breakfast, tabloids, Big Brother's Little Brother...
As mentioned here recently, the fallout following Emily's removal from the house raises many questions about whether Big Brother executives overreacted.
Another thing it has done is allow former housemate Narinder Kaur plenty of opportunities to voice her opinion about racism in the house over the years. And flog her new book. Apparently her forthcoming tome will lift the lid on the moments of racism over the years which we, the viewers, have not seen.
Now, my main memory of Narinder is of her solemnly informing her housemates, back in the second series, that she had finally done a poo after a troublesome period of constipation (seriously, that's what springs to mind). These days, however, she seems to be the go-to girl for an opinion on racism. She was on BBC Breakfast this morning, she's quoted in the tabloids, while earlier in the year she popped up during the whole Shilpa affair.
All of which is very handy when you've just written a book whose blurb runs thusly:
"There are now around 100 former housemates, some drifting around aimlessly, some the walking wounded, some who went back to their old lives as best as they could, and some, well… who knows?"
Um, did these people willingly sign up to go on national TV, or survive a train crash? I'm not going to claim that the effects on your life of going on the show are negligible - I'm aware of this, which is why I would never put myself through it. But let's not paint them as complete victims. If we must, then it should be as victims of their own poor decision-making.
Apparently Sam Heuston, from BB6, went on to slash her wrists after fame faded (she was the needy one who paraded around in a bikini and had an annoying nervous laugh... like that narrows it down). I had her pegged as a suicide risk the moment she came on screen, so why she / her friends / her family / the Big Brother producers couldn't see this, I'm not sure. Anyway, now she'll be back in the public eye, albeit to a limited extent, so she can soon look forward to boarding a similar rollercoaster to the one which caused her to attempt suicide.
While Narinder may like to crusade against racism in the house - and whether the latest case qualifies as such is still open to debate - and expose the negative effects of appearing on the show, I hope she is able to acknowledge that she would literally have no career - and indeed be available for panto - had she not gone to that audition a few years ago.
